We’ve known the Roam team since 2018, when Loic was one of the first customers to order their electric vehicles. The energy, achievements, and passion of the team, driven to build an electric vehicle for Africa that was actually made in Africa, impressed us so much that we decided to invest. We loved their focus on used vehicles, which make up a majority of the auto fleet on the continent, and their ability to compete effectively on price versus traditional fuel vehicles.
Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, building one of the leading providers of electric vehicles in Africa, from motorcycles to off-road vehicles to buses. We continue to be hands-on partners, supporting expansion, fundraising, and operations, and are excited to continue our long term partnership with Roam as they electrify Africa.

Working to transform areas including public transportation, motorcycles, and taxis, the companies are looking to capitalize on Kenya’s position as a global leader in renewable energy, its wide tech adoption, and the government’s push for electric vehicles through friendly policies.

The first electric bus by Swedish-Kenyan EV startup Opibus has hit Kenya’s roads, marking the beginning of the company’s venture into the mass transit industry. Opibus first announced plans to roll out electric public transport buses last year when it raised $7.5 million in a pre-Series A round.

Bloomberg reports on Opibus latest funding round
The money from the biggest fund-raising ever by an electric vehicle company in Africa came from At One Ventures, Factor[e] Ventures and Ambo Ventures, Opibus said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Africa is one of the fastest growing transportation markets globally, with a total market potential of $10 billion by 2030, and is largely untapped,” Opibus said.
